OSL Grand Finals: Battle Report

BANNER11-1.png

A Monumental Series
This is one of the most important finals in a long time. It is the chance for Jaedong to be the third person in the history of the game to claim a Golden Mouse by winning his third OSL title. Even though I am not a Jaedong fan myself, I can see that he plays the highest level of Starcraft to this date. Even compared to the other great players of this year, Jaedong outshines all. Since Savior was defeated by Bisu and fell from dominance, there has been a vacuum of power in Starcraft. There is no Bonjwa, one who is overwhelmingly favored against almost every other player for a long period of time. Jaedong himself has said that he does not wish to be the Bonjwa. All he wants is to play the highest level of Starcraft possible, and I would say that he very often succeeds in regards to this.

The underdog in this final is Yellow[ArnC], there is no doubt about that. There is also no doubt that he is a very strong player. When comparing the Park twins, Yellow is a much more solid player, while Luxury is a typical cheesy Zerg (but very good at what he does.) . However, Luxury did manage to take the MSL out from under Jangbi. Yellow has a great deal to prove in this series.

Game 1: Holy World SE

Even the OSL Finals, featuring two of the world's greatest Zergs, begins like any other game of Starcraft.

e-Stars Heritage League

Have you ever wanted to see the old rivalries come back to life? The Lim-Jin rivalry, the Three Protoss Kings, the return of the Dreamer, Nada vs Savior, to name a few. These are only the matchups set to occur in the preliminary rounds -- there are bound to be epic matches in the upcoming semifinals and grand final. For those who followed the Starcraft scene since Boxer took the throne, or the time of the Holy Wars between Savior and the Death God, this is a chance to relive those times and see history repeat itself. For anyone who knows only Bisu, Flash, and Jaedong as their Starcraft gods: This is your history lesson. Pay close attention, for these players are the ones who have made Starcraft the true competitive sport that it is today.

Now, I will present brief battle reports with VOD links. Just click the links if you don't want to be spoiled!

Nal_Ra vs Nada @ Outsider:

The title for this game should speak for itself. The Dreamer himself vs the Tornado terran. Nal_Ra was one of the Three Protoss Kings, and invented the forge first fast expand (sorry for all those people who though Bisu invented it). He was known for his increased usage of cannons at a ti... [ Read more ]
Avalon MSL Round of 16

Its that time of year when the flowers are in bloom, the beaches are packed, and korean teenagers are crammed into little booths playing Starcraft in front of thousands of people world wide. Yes, its the Avalon MSL and Day 1 of the Round of 16 has just been played. I offer my thoughts on each game played so far and my predictions on how each series will pan out.

Calm vs ForGG

Calm is innovative. Why it took him some 3 and a half years to show it will always be a mystery. Instead of facing ForGG's heavy metal push head on, he simply went around it and charged straight into ForGG's completely unprotected natural. ForGG was so shocked that his Goliaths all wet themselves simultaneously and ran crying back to base. Calm's attack force was mopped up, but this gave him all of the time to he needed to rebuild his troop count. Now it was a brilliant move and great harassment, but it should have only worked once. Apparently ForGG's troops get lonely too, because they couldn't bear to split up the second time it happened either. By the time they were emotionally mature enough to break the sunken wall, ForGG's economy was already crippled. Unless ForGG stops employing 7 year-olds to drive his Goliaths, Calm is going to steamroll him in the next match as well.

How to get a Beta Key

How to get a Beta Key

The beta is coming soon (I make this statement with a degree of confidence), and I'm sure that if you are reading this now there is a high chance that you also want to take part in it. With that in mind, I have compiled a list of the beta key contests that are currently being held in the Starcraft community.

Blizzard based Comic Contest:
You should probably know about this one already. The rules are simple: each month you are allowed to submit a Starcraft related comic that you drew. The winner of the contest (1st place only) receives a Beta Key, while 2nd and 3rd place get some goodies from Blizzard too. In my opinion, the winners thus far have been seriously lacking in humor, so that means that anyone with a decent ability to draw and a great sense of humor should have a good shot at winning this. One of the winners, in fact, was barely more than a Starcraft screenshot with text pasted on. It wasn't even funny. So get out there and get to drawing -- I hope a few of you are encouraged to do some good work by this.

Check it out here: http://www.starcraft2.com/features/contests/comic.xml

Campaign Creations Starcraft Campaign Contest:

Map makers should pay special interest to this contest. Campaign Creations is holding a contest where first, second, and ... [ Read more ]
